Global Recycling Foundation Declares 2026 Recycling Heroes and Rising Startups
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Global Recycling Foundation has announced the winners of its 2026 Recycling Heroes Competition, showcasing efforts that treat waste as a valuable resource and a driver of the circular economy. This year’s entries emphasize turning waste streams into economic opportunities and sustainable benefits for communities. Entrants submitted brief videos illustrating how their initiatives align with the theme, and the organization also recognized five start-up ventures for their early-stage impact. A total of 15 winners will each receive a $500 prize.

Winners of the 2026 Recycling Heroes Competition

  • RecyclesPay — African Clean Up Initiative, Nigeria: This program links recyclable material collection to educational support, helping families cover school fees and reduce barriers to student participation.
  • Spanish Federation of Recovery and Recycling, Spain: Acknowledges the workers who transform waste into valuable resources, underscoring a culture that places recycling at the core of daily life and planetary protection.
  • The Nautilus Project, Gibraltar: The Great Gibraltar Beach Cleans mobilizes volunteers, including schools, to remove marine litter and safeguard coastal ecosystems through regular community events.
  • Dajopen Waste Management Solutions, Kitale, Kenya: Converts urban biodegradable waste into high-quality fertilizer while training others in circular economy entrepreneurship and practical skills.
  • Fatema Fruitwala (Green Warrior. Earth), United Arab Emirates: Upcycles textile and plastic waste into usable products, raising awareness and surpassing notable waste reduction milestones.
  • MiReHu Nonprofit Kft, Hungary: Focuses on preventing waste by turning broken items into designer products and promoting furniture reuse to curb new purchases.
  • Pipilika — Gold from E-Waste to Contemporary Jewellery, Ireland/UK: Demonstrates the potential of recovered gold from electronic waste by creating contemporary jewellery and encouraging sector uptake of recycled materials.
  • Triple R Recycling, Abuja, Nigeria: Aims to reduce plastic pollution by building an efficient collection and recycling network, including buy-back schemes that create income for youth and women.
  • The Circular Oasis at CR205, Singapore: Pioneers a closed-loop water recycling system in construction, turning treated site runoff into a cascading reuse model that supports Singapore Green Plan 2030.
  • Zero Waste ZP, Ukraine: PlasticOn operates a community recycling workshop that demonstrates plastic waste can be repurposed, with space and equipment funded through crowdfunding and grants.
  • EnviroCom Australia: Provides environmental education and research services across government, communities, schools, and the private sector to enhance sustainable outcomes and resource recovery.
  • Quest for Zero Waste Advocacy & Actions, USA: Promotes a resource-efficient home and living space that supports ongoing education, showcasing zero-waste practices and community engagement.
  • Leafline Washable Sanitary Wear, South Africa: Manufactures washable sanitary products from natural fibers to replace disposable options, advancing safer, more sustainable menstrual care.
  • Jhun-Jhun Agustin, Philippines: Initiatives include providing solar lighting to indigenous communities while promoting plogging — a practice that combines running with trash collection for environmental and social benefits.
  • BLESSN EVEA SIGNATURE, Abuja, Nigeria: Upcycles textile, fashion, and plastic waste into durable new products, supporting job creation and sustainable waste management.

Across these entries, winners demonstrated practical approaches to turning waste streams into usable resources, whether through education, frontline recycling work, or community-led environmental initiatives. The competition’s judges highlighted the breadth of innovation—from community programs and educational partnerships to new business models that integrate waste reduction with social impact. The winners’ projects collectively reflect a growing recognition that recycling is not merely a环保 activity, but a catalyst for local development, entrepreneurship, and resilience in the face of resource constraints.

Start-up Winners

  • Business & Hotel Management School Sustainability Club, Switzerland: Store Recycling Innovation is a student-led effort that develops new recycling solutions and operates a program called Re:Store, which repurposes common items and reduces waste for hundreds of students.
  • Little Coffee Cup, United Kingdom: Produces an original children’s book created entirely from recycled coffee cups, turning challenging waste into an educational resource with measurable circular economy impact.
  • LassaSafe, Nigeria: Works to lower environmental risk factors linked to notifiable diseases by promoting sustainable waste management, recycling, and improved community sanitation practices.
  • BSU Mandiri – A Grassroots Movement, Indonesia: A community-led effort that diverted a significant amount of recyclable waste from landfills with a volunteer-based model supported by professionals, parents, and students alike.
  • Jesús González, Mexico: Shares a story of learning and upcycling skills developed while incarcerated, turning plastic bags into bag and fashion accessories and using this craft to generate income and sustain basic needs.

Each startup winner receives $500 in recognition of early-stage potential and the ability to scale sustainable waste-reduction practices. The awards emphasize the importance of youth-led innovation and practical demonstrations that can be replicated in other communities. Organizers caution that real progress requires ongoing collaboration among governments, businesses, and citizens as they pursue a resilient circular economy.
